It seems brewers and bikes go together better than a a pint and a pack of pork scratchings. Across the pond in the US of A for example, New Belgium host their Tour de Fat event, which brings together bikes and beers, the Tiny Rebel team recently embarked on a mammoth 180 mile bike ride for charity from Holland to Belgium and Brains are also no strangers to hopping on their bikes (pun intended).
A few months ago the Cardiff brewers delivered their beer by bike to the capital’s pubs to prevent them from running dry during the Six Nations and last Christmas the Brains Pub Estate underwent a charity ride to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust and now they are back on their saddles for a new challenge.
A team of 15 from the Welsh brewer and pub operator are set to mount their bikes to deliver a cask of their current seasonal ale, Le Peloton, to Bala and to raise precious funds for Wooden Spoon, a charity that supports disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.
“As a company we’ve been strong supporters of Wooden Spoon and this is another great opportunity to raise funds,” said Bill Dobson, the head brewer at Brains. “We also hope it gets everyone in the cycling spirit and ready for the Tour de France,” he continued.
The 150 mile relay style ride will commence on Thursday 3 July at 1pm and finish 24 hours later at the White Lion Royal Hotel in Bala, to coincide with the start of the Tour de France, which starts the day after.
The team, including one Danny Champken who has previously written for the blog, will be carrying the cask in their specially adapted baker’s bike that was previously used for their Six Nations beer delivery.
“We’re all keen cyclists but cycling 150 miles through some hilly parts of Wales, weighed down with a cask of our seasonal beer, Le Peloton, will be tough,” said Bill. “We’ll be celebrating with a pint of Le Peloton when we reach the White Lion, plus we’ll be crowning one rider ‘King of the Mountains,'” he added.
Brewed to celebrate the summer of cycling, Le Peloton ABV 4% is a golden ale infused with Welsh honey, and will be available throughout Wales from 1 July.
