Aquariums are pretty cool; getting up close and personal with jelly fishes without the fear of getting stung and having to get someone to take a wee on you, going through that sweet shark tube, stroking sting rays and sipping on a couple of SA’s… wait, what? Drinking Brains? In an aquarium? Surely not? Well Brains’ latest venture is just that!
Aqua Nova, set to open next summer, is to be the UK’s first underwater pub and will be located literally in the Bay and will offer panoramic views in an aquarium style venue.
“Customers are always looking for something new and different,” said Bruce Newman, head of marketing for Wales’ largest brewer and pub operator. “As well as a great range of beers, such as Brains’ All at Sea IPA, customers can also look forward to a fresh seafood menu, including Cardiff Bay fish of the day.”
The sister pub of Mermaid Quay’s Terra Nova will be built five metres below the surface and although you should never drink and dive, you’ll be able to drink and dive! Aqua Nova will be accessed via a short water taxi ride and is set to offer Cardiff’s punters a unique drinking experience.
Captain Burt Sye, Head of UK Naval Technologies, has been working closely with the brewery and said, “This is a complex but revolutionary project and one that is sure to be popular with the British pub goers.”
Whether pub goers will be able to marvel at majestic sea creatures or not is doubtful, and the reality is more likely to be a couple of trolleys and the odd mackerel.
If you can’t wait to literally sink some pints, Brains is looking for volunteers to don specially adapted dive suits and be the first to test its beers underwater to ensure they’re unaffected by pressure changes. For more details, and to sign up, call Brains on 029 2040 2060 and quote ‘Aqua Nova.’
